Recently, someone asked me an unusual question: If you couldn’t take a car, which suv/crossover would you choose to cruise up the Pacific Coast Highway? Interesting. I love these questions – they are like mental masturbation – which incidentally, is my second favorite kind. Actually, I once drove down from San Francisco through Monterey and Carmel down to Big Sur (lunch at Post Ranch Inn is terrific) in an Audi Q7. And while I would generally appreciate taking those serpentine curves in something more low slung and sleek, I have to admit that the higher seating position sure afforded some amazing views. Although maybe not so appreciated when banking into a guard-rail-less curve looking down at nothing. And frankly, some of those old bridges are scary enough without the added heft of a gigantic SUV beast. But if I must, I think right now I would choose the Volkswagen Touareg. It is a luxurious, yet understated cruiser – and with none of that look-at-me, I’m-rich! screaming so many luxury SUVs try to do these days. It is powerful, tight in it’s handling, and the enormous panoramic sunroof would make the views postcard perfect. In fact the inside is so nice, you wouldn’t need bother looking outside to be delighted. It would make the 6-7 hour drive to San Fran a breeze. Then once there, I’d go straight into Tartine. Those of you who know, know. Yum.
